The San Mateo Kabuki Club (Kabuki Kai) is screening a video of The Medicine Peddler (Uiro Uri) (synopsis) (Naritaya summary) on July 3. Cast: Danjuro, Baibyoku, Mitsugoro, Kikugoro.
One of the "18 Grand Kabuki Plays" (Kabuki juhachiban) of the Danjuro line, this is one of the plays that Ebizo had to pull out of in Kyoto last December because of his incident; Kataoka Nizaemon and Kataoka Ainosuke took over his role. Also interesting, Portland State University staged the play recently–in English–in July 2008.
The screening is on Sunday, July 3 at 1:30pm at the San Mateo Japanese American Community Center, 415 S. Claremont St., San Mateo, CA (near the San Mateo Caltrain station). The video will be shown in Japanese, with an introduction and synopsis provided in English. For more information, please contact Mika (650) 341-6849 (Japanese) or Yoko (650) 341-5872 (English).
The San Mateo Kabuki Kai is unique in the U.S. (and perhaps the world) in its sheer dedication to Kabuki, having screened a Kabuki video once a month for the past 12+ years. Their members are all wonderful people. The group screens a Kabuki performance the first Sunday of every month at 1:30pm at the San Mateo Japanese American Community Center.
