For those of you who love Japanese film, there is a very exciting series coming up at Berkeley’s Pacific Film Archives: “Japanese Divas.”
The series is extensive: 22 films featuring some of the greatest Japanese actresses of all time, including Kinuyo Tanaka, Setsuko Hara, Haruko Sugimura, Hideko Takamine, and Machiko Kyo. There are a lot of heavy-hitter classics, along with some lesser-known films that look very interesting, including a movie called Immortal Love starring Takamine and my favorite, Nakadai Tatsuya, that apparently takes place in Aso, Kumamoto, where I lived on JET!
