2020 JETAANC Scholarship Application

The JETAANC serves as a support network and resource for returning JET Program participants in their transition to the Northern California Area, and also provides assistance in the recruitment and orientation of new participants of the JET Program for the Consulate General of Japan, San Francisco. Furthermore, the organization works to promote and support a deep understanding of Japanese culture by organizing and participating in Japan-related events.

The JETAANC Scholarship honors one high school senior each year that has demonstrated a genuine interest in Japan with a non-renewable $2,000 academic scholarship. JETAANC requires that the recipient be accepted to an accredited 2 or 4-year college for Fall 2020 and be a resident of one of the Northern California or Nevada counties that the JETAANC serves.

Selection Criteria:
The JETAANC Scholarship Committee will evaluate applicants based on their demonstrated interest in Japan, academic accomplishments and interests, recommendations, and responses to questions contained in the application. A demonstrated financial need may also be taken into consideration.

Applicants must:

  1. Be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident of the U.S.
  2. Be in the process of enrolling (full-time) in an undergraduate program at an accredited 2 or 4-year college or university within the U.S. commencing Fall 2020
  3. Be a high school senior that lives in one of the following counties: Monterey, Kings, Tulane, and Inyo counties and all California counties north of them, as well as all counties in Nevada
  4. Possess a sincere interest in Japan, as demonstrated by at least one (1) year of directed study or related activity

  3. required essay

✓ applications must be completed and electronically submitted by April 17, 2020
✓ winners will be notified by May 4, 2020
✓ funds will be sent directly to the attending institution for use in the fall term by June 1, 2020

The JET Alumni Association of Northern California is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization open to current and returning participants of the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program. JETAANC formed in 1990, and became a California Public Benefit Corporation in 1994. The Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program is aimed at promoting grass-roots international exchange between Japan and other nations. The number of countries sending participants has risen over the years, as has the number of participants. In 2018, the program hosted 5,528 participants from 54 countries.
