Kabuki on Film: The 47 Ronin, Part 2 – 4/29

Join us for Part 2 of The 47 Ronin Project, a year-long exploration of The 47 Ronin (Chushingura), one of the most popular Japanese stories of all time. Don’t worry if you missed Act I, we’ll review the plot’s progression beforehand!

The 47 Ronin, Part 2
Fearing the evil Lord Morono may attack their master, Lord Hangan’s loyal retainers make plans to bribe him. All is well until Morono provokes the noble Hangan to breach court etiquette by drawing his sword….a crime punishable by death!

This month we’ll study on film Act II performed as Bunraku puppet theater and Act III performed as Kabuki theater. (synopsis) In Japanese with English subtitles.
