About the Exhibit
Shigemi Sanders uses raku firing, a 400 year old Japanese firing method that uses low temperature firing and reduction to bring out an earthy appearance. The exhibit will contain ceramic representations of kimono ranging from smaller 15 inch kimono to large kimono over 4 feet in height, as well as some seasonal flower representations. Sanders' depictions of ceramic kimono are truly unique and should not be missed.
About the Artist
Sanders fascination with ceramics started in the early 1970s when she made vases and platters at a local church in Los Angeles. That initial spark lead to serious ceramics study and several exhibitions throughout California. Sanders says:
"My artwork expresses my cultural thoughts and joy of life through creation of ceramic ware. Reflecting on my earlier upbringing in Japan, I strive to convey the beauty and cultural depths of Japan by taking on themes such as kimono, seasonal flowers, landscapes, and folk arts."
