JETAANC Kabuki on Film: Mishima’s “Sardine Seller’s Net of Love”

Join alumni and friends for a special class focusing on “The Sardine Seller’s Net of Love,” a rare Kabuki drama penned by the legendary author Yukio Mishima. The class explores a film version of the play, one of the few light romantic comedies in the Kabuki canon. (synopsis)

Originally performed in 1954, the play takes its theme from a story in the “Otogi Zoshi,” a collection of medieval folk tales. It is written in a very sophisticated (typical Mishima) and humorous (not typical Mishima) style. The word “delightful” really applies to this delicious little confection, Mishima’s affectionate gift to Kabuki.
