About the Artist

Bruggeman's interest in Japanese ceramics began when he saw a film about the famous Japanese artist Shoji Hamada while attending high school in New York State. Bruggeman says, "The harmony between this man and the local materials he used to create art astounded me. Further, his overall way of life, respect for craftsmanship, and evolved understanding of what 'good' is seemed to resonate in the culture he was creating these objects for. These seemingly simple objects, when mindfully crafted, contain immeasurable beauty, harmony, and worth."

Bruggeman has now worked with clay for almost twenty years. Nearly everything he makes is influenced by Japanese ceramics. He not only makes traditional Japanese ceramics, but he has also designed and built a number of wood-fired kilns based on Japanese designs. Most recently he has been producing work influenced by Japanese food and flower decoration. Bruggeman now lives in Northern California and is an Assistant Professor of Fine and Performing Arts at Napa Valley College where he shares his passion for ceramics with his students.

The Exhibit

Rhue Bruggeman will be exhibiting several larger pieces, as well as smaller functional pieces such as sake sets, tea bowls, and sushi platters. He uses traditional Japanese glazes and firing processes like Raku, Shino, Oribe and, Kaki ash glazes and employs various wood firing techniques. He also merges forms that originated in other cultures with Japanese glazes and firing techniques to create traditional and eclectic forms.
