Join alumni and friends for a special film screening of the Kabuki classic, The Village School (Terakoya). The final act of Sugawara’s Secrets of Calligraphy presents one of the great tragic moments in all Kabuki. In medieval Japan, Genzo and his wife Tonami have been ordered to execute the son of their lord, whom they swore to protect. Now the imposing warrior Matsuomaru has arrived to confirm that he’s dead. What should they do? (synopsis)

Starring some of the greatest Kabuki actors of all time, including Matsumoto Koshiro VIII, Nakamura Ganjiro II, and Nakamura Shikan VII. Recorded at the Kabukiza Theater, Tokyo. 90 minutes. In Japanese with English translation.

Newcomers are welcome and no previous knowledge is necessary. If you are curious about why Kabuki’s unique combination of drama, music, dance, and spectacle continues to entertain millions every year, this is a rare chance to see one of the all-time classics! Free and open to the public.

Presented by JETAANC Kabuki Club. Co-sponsored by the Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California (JCCCNC).
