Join alumni and friends this November for a special screening of the Kabuki classic, The Village School (Teraokya). The final act of Sugawara’s Secrets of Calligraphy presents one of the great tragic moments in all Kabuki. Matsuomaru and his wife Chiyo sacrifice their own child so that the son of their Lord Michizane may live. (synopsis)

Starring some of the greatest Kabuki actors of all time, including Matsumoto Koshiro VIII, Nakamura Ganjiro II, and Nakamura Shikan VII. Recorded at the Kabukiza Theater, Tokyo. 90 minutes. In Japanese with English translation.

Newcomers are welcome and no previous knowledge is necessary. If you are curious about why Kabuki’s unique combination of drama, music, dance, and spectacle continues to entertain millions every year, this is a rare chance to see one of the all-time classics! Free and open to the public.
